Apologies For the Inconvenience
20 February 2010 23:02 PMI’ve been hanging out of my pants for the 2010 V8 Supercar season since July last year when Team Vodafone announced a switch from Ford to Holden. I would be telling porkies if I said I was surprised at their switch to Holden but the decision still sits a little uneasily in my stomach. Sure, the days of brand loyalty are long dead and lately drivers switch from Ford to Holden and back again about as often as I change my underwear, so about once a year. But I’m a fan of commitment, of sticking together through better or worse, thick and thin, and it wasn’t as though Team Vodafone were struggling for results. I guess sometimes V8 Supercar teams and their manufacturers wake up one day and realise that they don’t love each other any more.
And if we’re going to point fingers here, and I am one who likes to point a finger, I think we can all wave our index fingers at Ford for their appalling treatment of the Championship winning team. The team who despite being thrown to the side of the track like tyre marbles on race day went on to win back to back titles. The team who came to Abu Dhabi and showed the kind of form that both the red and blue camps were fearing they would show. With the exception of a minor spin in qualifying Team Vodafone have absolutely dominated the Abu Dhabi event thus far and I was looking forward to seeing if that continued, but I guess I’ll have to wait.
For you see I can’t access live coverage this weekend. I can’t even get coverage on the same day. I can almost forgive Channel 7′s decision to not show the event live; it’s not like they have two broadcasting channels! They took the decision to show the event during a time when more people would be likely to watch. Again this is all well and good, when I want to be I can be a reasonable person. Besides, Channel 7 would have took comfort in knowing that any die hard fans, such as myself, could enjoy the live coverage available on the V8 Supercars website.
‘Apologies for the inconvenience’? Gee, thanks. See I don’t think you understand what this inconvenience means to me. Sure, I might be a bored 20 something male looking for a little action on Saturday night and this isn’t the end of the world, but when you’ve been looking forward to something for so long only to be denied it at the last moment, well, you may as well just tell all the children in the world that Santa Claus isn’t real. In reply you might say to me that I should go out, get drunk and try get laid. But you’re forgetting something v8supercars.com.au, I’m an Australian male, and we like to put horsepower before ho’s.
So maybe I’ll stop pointing my finger at Ford for a while and start pointing it at the V8 Supercars instead. Don’t worry, if it bothers you I can apologise for the inconvenience.
